ome of
the finest, most original pieces of cinematography are to be found in the
era of the silent film. Although these are often associated with the comedies
of Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, and Charlie Chaplain, there also existed a
tremendous body of film art featuring dramas, poignant stories, and historical
epics - the latter often conceived on a grand scale.
Before
the advent of sound synchronization in movies, the musical score was
provided by an organist or a pianist in the smaller towns. More often than
not, the score involved a significant amount of improvisation. The skill of
the organist, along with the varied sounds and special effects of theater
organs like the grand Wurlitzer (pictured left) gave voice to the actions in
the film.
Mr. Savoy
is honored to be a part of this grand tradition and is often called upon to
provide accompaniments to these silent movie classics. An evening of silent
films is a wonderful "low tech" community event, filled with fun and
fascination for all ages. Team it up with an ice cream social and you can't
go wrong!
